The disappearing format problem
MiniDV and Hi-8 camcorders are no longer manufactured and increasingly difficult to find in working condition. The specialized playback decks and FireWire connections required to transfer MiniDV footage correctly are rare even among professionals.
The footage on those tapes — a child's first steps, a family vacation, a voice you can't hear any other way — exists nowhere else. Every year those tapes sit in storage, the magnetic particles holding that footage degrade a little more.
Professional conversion while the tapes are still readable is the only way to preserve what's on them.
Formats we convert
Digital camcorder tapes from the late 90s and 2000s. Often the sharpest home video in family collections. Requires FireWire capture — we have the equipment.
Sony's high-quality analog camcorder format from the early 90s. Significant quality step above VHS, and increasingly hard to play back.
Standard VHS and the compact VHS-C format used in many camcorders from the 80s and 90s — the most common format in family collections.
Sony's earlier format — less common than VHS but fully supported. If you have Betamax tapes, we can convert them.

The process
We come to your home at a time that suits you, including evenings and weekends. We catalogue every tape in front of you and hand you a signed inventory receipt before anything leaves your hands. You never ship anything.
Each tape is converted at its original quality — no re-compression, no quality loss from format conversion. Files are named by date and event, organized into folders by year and chapter. All work is done in Austin, in-house.
You receive a private, password-protected cloud link. We return in person with every original tape and walk through your completed archive with you. Optional: add a physical SSD drive for permanent offline access.

Yes. We convert MiniDV tapes using professional playback equipment and FireWire capture — the correct method for preserving the original digital quality. Output is HD MP4, organized by date and event.
MiniDV tapes store footage as a digital signal that requires a working MiniDV deck and a FireWire connection to capture correctly. USB analog capture adapters don't work with MiniDV — they're designed for analog formats like VHS and typically produce degraded results even then.

We inspect every tape before we begin. If a tape is too degraded to recover, we tell you before we start and there is no charge for tapes we cannot convert.
